Early Life and Education

Patty and Wayne Judge, who both worked as teachers in Linden, California, adopted Aaron Judge the day after his birth.

He recalls, “I knew I didn’t look like them,” when his parents told him he was adopted when he was 10 or 11.

John, his elder brother, was also adopted. Judge is multiracial. He supported the San Francisco Giants as a child.

Aaron Judge was a three-sport star while attending Linden High School.

He participated in sports as a center for the basketball team, a wide receiver for the football team, and a pitcher and first baseman for the baseball team.

He set a football school record for touchdowns and was the team’s scoring leader in hoops (18.2).

He played baseball for the Linden High School squad that advanced to the Division III playoffs of the California Interscholastic Federation.

Several institutions, including Notre Dame, Stanford, and UCLA, recruited Judge to play tight end in football, but he preferred baseball.

He was chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the 31st round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, but he decided to attend California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) and play baseball for the Fresno State Bulldogs in the Western Athletic Conference instead (WAC).

Judge played on a Fresno State squad in 2011 that won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament, qualified for the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, and shared the regular season WAC championship.

Career

The Yankees selected Judge with the 32nd overall choice in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft, a pick they were awarded as restitution for losing Nick Swisher to free agency.

Judge received a $1.8 million signing bonus from the Yankees when he signed with them.

During a base running exercise, he tore his quadriceps femoris muscle, which prevented him from playing in the 2013 season.

In 2014, he made his professional debut with the Class A South Atlantic League’s Charleston RiverDogs.

He played in 65 games for Charleston, hitting.333 (6th in the league), .428 (3rd) on-base percentage (OBP), .530 (6th) slugging percentage (SLG), and nine home runs with 45 RBIs.

During the season, the Yankees advanced him to the Class A-Advanced Tampa Yankees of the Florida State League, where he played in 66 games while hitting .283 with a .411 OBP, which was second in the league, a.442 SLG, eight home runs, and 33 RBIs.

On August 13, 2016, Aaron Judge made his Major League Baseball debut, starting in right field against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Tyler Austin, the batter before Judge, who was also making his MLB debut, hit a home run off Matt Andriese in his first MLB at-bat.

This was the first time ever that two teammates hit home runs in the same game during their first MLB at-bats.

The second Yankees player (after Joe Lefebvre in 1980) to smash a home run in each of his first two MLB games was Judge, who also did so in his second game.
